Though Duane's family roots are in Gambo and Fogo.He was born and grew up in Lourdes and West Bay on the Port au Port Peninsula. After graduation from high school Duane went on to attend the Marine Institute graduating from their program of Nautical Science.Following graduation he went to work in the oil fields offshore on the Grand Banks. His first job was as Ballast Control Operator on the oil rig the Glomar Grand Banks. He eventually went on to being involved in offshore safety with various stints over the next 28 years (North Sea, Indonesia, Singapore, Africa, Dubai in the Middle East) and at the time of his passing on the Hibernia Platform out on the Grand Banks.
Whenever Duane got the opportunity it was spent at his Mom and Dad's place in Gambo, enjoying his rides on his Atv, Snowmobile and trips up Gambo Pond in his boat and of course his Mom's home cooked meals.
