With heavy hearts we announce the death of John Edward Morrissey (Gambo, Newfoundland) who

passed away on August 22, 2026 at the age of 80.

Predeceased by his wife Anne Morrissey, his son Edward John (Johnny) Morrissey, his parents John

(Jack) and Eliza Morrissey, his sister Elizabeth (Betty) George and his brother William (Billy) Morrissey.

Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife Marjorie (Burt) Morrissey, Children: Gordon

(Angie), Theresa Norris, Robert Burt (Viola), Ivy Lundrigan (Jim), Stephen Burt (Jenny)and Kimberly

Gardner (Todd). Grandchildren: John, William, Stephen, Ryan, Adam, Scarlet, Luke, Zachary, Melanie,

Angela, Ashley, Jazmine and Jacob. Great-Grandchildren: Remy, Madison, Mackenzie, Jaxon, Brody,

Evan, Emma, Rachel, Evelyn, Jack and Chloe. Siblings: Dave (Phyllis), Brenda Rich, Gerard (Eileen), Gertie Hines, and

Nick (Alicia); as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

John, also affectionately called Papa John, was the definition of a gentleman. He lived his life with dignity

and honour. He expressed compassion and kindness to others without hesitation. He was a kind soul

with a quiet strength. John walked through life with a unique sense of humour that often resulted in

chuckles, confusion and bewilderment. He loved living in Newfoundland and was a wealth of information

regarding it’s geography and long held traditions. He was often heard telling funny stories from his

experiences with the many folks he met along his journey in life and saw the humour not only in others

but also himself.

John was a lover of music and would often be found listening to his favourite Newfoundland, Irish and

Classic Country tunes. He also appreciated a good Beatles song. John was known for his delicious

Jiggs Dinner and he cooked enough to feed an army. No one ever left Papa John’s house hungry. He

was generous with his treats and with his love.

Papa John once stated that he didn’t like confrontation or anger and lived a life respecting others. He

inspired those around him to be the same kind of person.

John loved to see family come for a visit and a cup of tea. He saw the value of loyalty which was evident

in his love for his family. John was loved by all those around him and he will be greatly missed by those

who were blessed to have known and loved him.
