Obituary

Matthew Paul Kane

July 4th 1958 - October 12th 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Matt Kane on Monday October 12, 2026, at James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander NL, surrounded by his daughters Crystal and Courtney at the age of 68

He was born on July 4, 1958 in Gander, NL, and was the beloved son of Phillip and Genevieve Kane.

Matt, or Matty to some, was one of a kind. He was a great storyteller and will be remembered for his humour, wit, bird whistling, and his warmth and generosity. He will be remembered by many for his random acts of kindness, and his ability to make people smile. Matt started working at Lakeside Homes in Gander at the age of 17. He later became a cook at James Paton Memorial Hospital where he worked for nearly 30 years before retiring due to injury. After retiring he and his wife Brenda became foster parents - opening their hearts and their home to countless foster children for 29 years.

Wherever he went, he was sure to have a chat. Talking to strangers was one of his passions, sometimes even offering up his home without telling his wife. His only qualifying question was "do you like animals"? His kindness even inspired a character portrayal in the award winning Broadway musical "Come from Away".

Matt was a dedicated church and community volunteer. He especially entertained the community during his legendary Christmas Concert performances. As a member of Council with the Town of Gambo, a board member for the foster family association and the Gambo Group Home, Matt cared deeply for the people around him.

He loved spending time at the cabin with his family and friends, and was always the center of attention, singing, acting out a story or telling a joke.

After losing his wife Brenda of 31 years, he was blessed with a precious grandson Lincoln, whom he loved and adored.

Predeceased by his parents Phillip and Genevieve, his loving wife Brenda, brothers Phillip, Herb, Patrick, Michael.

Leaving to mourn, his daughters Crystal (Sara) and Courtney (Eddie) and grandson Lincoln. His sister Marg (Dave), sister in laws Jean (Peter) and Debbie Ann. His nieces and nephews. And countless foster children and great foster grand-children.

The family wishes to thank the staff at JPMH for their compassion and care.
