It's with great sadness that we announce the passing of Roy Maxwell Winters, who passed peacefully
away at James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander, NL on Tuesday June 13, 2023. He was one day shy of
his 72nd birthday. He was born in Gambo on June 14, 1951.
He was predeceased by his brother, Wayne Winters, sister, Angela Winters and parents, Roland and Ula
Winters.
Leaving to mourn with loving memories are his wife of 50 years, Carrie Winters (Collins), sons Jason
Winters (Jennifer) and Justin Winters (Claire), brother Roland Winters Jr. (Anna), sister Sheila (Kevin),
brother Gary (Beulah), sister Cynthia, sister-in-law June Keats (Derek), sister-in-law Leone Gratto (Bob),
sister-in-law Theresa King (Don), sister-in-law Rowena Oram (Alec), 4 grandchildren Zachary, Riley,
Bryce and Haedyn, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, many friends, especially his best friend Doug Evelley
(Janette).
Roy was first and foremost a loving husband, father and Poppy. He loved and cherished all his kids and
grandkids with all that he was, especially his grandkids, they were the light of his life. He was loved by
family and friends and had always liked to joke and carry on. He loved having a chat, as many people of
Gambo know all too well, in the store, the Pharmacy or the Post Office, wherever he went, there was
someone to have a chat with. He was a man who would give you whatever he could, was always willing
to help, very giving and asked for nothing in return.
He had a beautiful and special love for the outdoors. He developed a passion for nature as a young boy
and it stayed with him for his entire life. He loved moose hunting, rabbit catching, and berry picking in the
Fall, all types of fishing, ice, trout, smelt, cod, it didn't matter, he loved it all. He knew every inch of the
country around Gambo, he could put a hook anywhere and catch a fish, he knew all the good spots. He
especially loved salmon fishing in the Falls, there's even a rock named after him in there. In the outdoors,
he was at peace… he was a legend.
He loved taking a ride on his quad, especially when his grandsons were home in the summer. He wanted
to show them everything he loved about the outdoors, share the experiences and hopefully instill his
passion for the outdoors in them. He also loved taking trips to the pool with them followed by a stop into
Vonnie Lee's Chicken Bar for slurpees or ice cream on the way back.
He always loved making the grandkids laugh. Being silly on Facetime was his thing with his grand
daughter, always made her laugh. He always joked around with all of the grandsons with questions of
their girlfriend statuses. He did anything to get them to laugh, he had a dry sense of humour with them
and the one thing that made everyone laugh especially, was his Ernie from Sesame Street laugh, that
always worked.
He will be sadly missed and forever loved. He is now with God, no more pain, no more pills, no more
doctors. You got both your legs again, grab your rod, jump on the quad, get into the Falls and get that
first salmon of the year on the brook. You're finally at peace, we will all miss you so much, we all love you
more than you could imagine… and we will see you again further down the trail.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Roy's memory can be made to the Diabetic Association of Canada.

Funeral Service will take place at the Anglican Church July 22nd at 2:00 PM
